Birmingham Army Hospital

The Birmingham Army Hospital was probably used during the Civil War. The building is now a high school. A cemetery is located behind it.

Anson Farm House

The Anson Farm House was located 1/2 mile southeast of Anson, Kansas, on 70th Avenue. The house, two stories high with a grain tower in the front, was always thought of as odd due to the fact there was no way to get to the second floor from the inside. In order to get in, you would have to get on the roof from the front porch and climb into the windows on the second story. Inside, there is an eight-sided room that has no real purpose. However, the house has since been demolished.

Abandoned House in Abilene, Kansas

Located right off of the I-70 on Fair Road is an abandoned house that was left behind by its former residents. Not much is known about the house.

4H Building

The 4H building in Rose Hill, Kansas was built in 1930; there is no record of when it was abandoned.

Titan II Missile Silo 533-2 (2/18)

Titan II Missile Silos were built near Wichita, Kansas. This particular silo was #2 of 18 built. These silos were originally used during the Cold War, but were decommissioned in the 1980s due to the SALT Treaty.

Twin Mound, Kansas

Twin Mound, located in Douglas County, Kansas, was named for its two hills that lie in the area’s landscape. Henry Hiatt, who was born in Dublin, Indiana in 1816, moved out to the Kansas Territory with his wife and five children in 1856, eventually settling in Bloomington. For a short while after arriving in Bloomington, Hiatt and two other men operated a saw mill. However, within a year, Hiatt left the business and moved his family seven miles southwest of the town.

Cicero, Kansas

Cicero, Kansas was founded some time during the late 1800s, lying just four miles north and two miles east of Wellington, Kansas in Sumner County. Originally, it had two wooden grain elevators, a town hall, around four houses, and a store with a post office. A one-room school house was located 1/2 mile west of Cicero.

Tampa, Kansas

In the northeast corner of the town, Tampa, Kansas has a Santa Fe Trail marker and a pointer to ruts created by the wagons of pioneers who were trying to get to California during its gold rush. The old grade school, despite being in near-ruin, was a spectacular sight in its day. In the 2000 census, Tampa’s population was 144.
