History

In September 1934, a young man named Lonnie Stephens was wrongfully accused of murdering his girlfriend. After escaping from a chain gang, Stephens attempted to hitch a ride to get away. Tragically, he was struck and killed by a car. The true killer confessed to his crime years after Stephens’ death. The ghost of Lonnie Stephens has been seen standing in the middle of the northbound lanes of Highway 11 and the exit off Highway 565 between Decatur and Huntsville. With his arms outstretched, his spirit begs for someone to stop to pick him up. Cars often swerve around him or run through him, much to the drivers’ shock.
