STATUS: Open as the Lowndesboro Town Hall
Marengo was originally built in Autauga County, Alabama in 1847, but it was disassembled and moved across the Alabama River, where it was reassembled in Lowndesboro in 1854. About one hundred years later in 1961, Kathleen Powell, an invalid, committed suicide within the mansion’s walls.
For years, those who lived in the house complained of a foreboding feeling and hearing the sound of strange and sudden laughter. In February, 1976, a psychic medium freed the spirit, and there have been no occurrences since. On March 1st, 2011, Marengo was turned into the Lowndesboro Town Hall.
